How many pages should a short comic be?
Six, eight, ten or twelve pages: what fits a gag, a moment, a story and a chapter, with pacing math you can actually use.
The short answer
- A gag or single joke: 6 pages, generously drawn.
- One real moment (a date, an incident): 6 to 8 pages.
- A story with a turn (how we met, the trip): 8 to 10 pages.
- A chapter that sets up a series: 10 to 12 pages.
The pacing math
A comic page carries three to six panels, and a panel holds one beat. A six-beat story (setup, want, problem, scramble, turn, button) therefore fits in six pages with room for splash moments. If your story has two turns, you need eight to ten. If it needs twelve turns, it is two comics.
Shorter is almost always better
The most common mistake is stretching one moment across too many pages. Readers feel padding instantly. When in doubt, pick the smaller count and let the big moment take a full-page panel instead of adding pages.

When you want more, make a series
Anything beyond twelve pages reads better as chapters. Series keep your cast and style automatically, and a reader who finished chapter one is the easiest reader to bring back.
