How to make comics for Instagram and TikTok that people finish
Panel sizes, carousel pacing, hook panels and a sustainable weekly workflow for posting comics on Instagram and TikTok without drawing.
The formats that work
- Instagram carousel: one page or one panel per slide, 4:5, punchline on the last slide.
- TikTok photo mode: panels as slides with a trending sound, first slide is the hook.
- Stories: single panels with a poll or question sticker on the beat panel.
- Reels: slow pan across a page while a voiceover reads the bubbles.
The first panel is the thumbnail
Feeds decide in half a second. Your first panel needs a face and a promise: an expression plus a line that sets up trouble. 'The cat has opinions' beats 'Episode 4' every time. Cut straight into the moment and let context arrive later.
A cast people recognise
Recurring characters are the difference between posts and a series people follow. With a comic maker that locks characters, your leads look identical across every episode, so the audience builds a relationship with them. Two or three characters is plenty.
A weekly workflow that does not burn out
- Keep a note of moments that made you laugh during the week.
- Pick one, write it as one sentence, generate the episode.
- Redraw at most one page. Perfectionism kills series.
- Post the same day each week. Consistency beats quality spikes.
Batch two episodes when inspiration is high. A one-episode buffer has saved every webcomic artist alive.
