Manga vs manhwa vs webtoon: the differences, with examples
Manga, manhwa and webtoon are often used interchangeably. They're not the same: different countries, reading directions, color and page formats. Here's how to tell them apart and which to pick for your own comic.
The short version
- Manga, Japanese. Usually black and white, read right-to-left, printed in volumes. Screentones, speed lines, expressive eyes.
- Manhwa, Korean. Mostly full color today, read left-to-right. Polished linework, glossy shading, cinematic close-ups.
- Webtoon, a format more than a country: vertical-scroll comics made for phones, full color, one panel after another. Many manhwa are published as webtoons.
- Manhua, Chinese. Often painterly and flowing, with a lot of fantasy and historical settings.
Manga
Manga is the Japanese tradition: black-and-white pages with screentone shading, dynamic panel layouts and a visual language for emotion (sweat drops, speed lines, exaggerated expressions). Pages read right-to-left. Genres range from shonen action to slice-of-life, and the black-and-white look prints beautifully.
Manhwa
Manhwa is Korean. Modern manhwa is almost always in color, reads left-to-right, and has a distinctive polish: clean lines, soft gradients, glossy hair and cinematic framing. It's the look behind most of the romance and action webcomics people binge on their phones, and because the proportions are natural, it flatters real faces.
Webtoon
“Webtoon” started as a Korean term for web comics and became the name of a format: a tall, vertical strip you scroll through, one or two panels wide, built for phones. Color is bright and friendly, shapes are simplified so they read at thumb size. If you want to share your comic on social media, the webtoon look is the natural choice.
Which one should you pick for your own comic?
- A gift or keepsake with real people in it → manhwa (likeness + polish).
- Something to post and share → webtoon (bright, readable on a phone).
- Action, drama, or something to print in black and white → manga.
- A fantasy or historical story → manhua.
You can draw the same story in more than one style, same cast, same script, different world.
